Work on the following:
You need a total of 15 quotes by next Wednesday. You will also need to explain three quotes
that we have not already discussed as a class. By "discuss," I mean tell me what the quote is saying. Most likely the quote will touch upon one of the themes in the novel.
- 3/4 page for one quote
- 1 paragraph for another
- 1 paragraph for another
You will hand in this quote journal Wednesday for 25 points
When you finish, start writing quiz questions for Demian. You and 5th period are writing your own test so I'd recommend writing REALLY good questions so that your questions will show up on the test.
You will receive 5 points for writing 5 good questions. Due at the end of the period tomorrow
The test will be multiple choice and will have the following three sections:
1. Identify the speaker of the quote
2. Multiple-choice (4 choices, not 5)
3. Matching
Write one test question for each of the three types of questions and the other two questions may be any of the three types.

The novel Demian talks a lot about trying to form your own identity in a world that is confusing. In a number of places Hesse refers to the German philosopher Nietzsche, who talked about the struggles people have in forming their own philosophy of life in a world in which they are alone. Here are some of Nietzsche's key ideas:
I hope you're enjoying Demian. From what I've noticed over the years, Herman Hesse is one of the most popular novelists for 17-25 year-olds. The reading is hard (especially this novel) but the ideas are intriguing because they deal with the struggle to find your identity, which all of you are doing right now, even though you might not think about it in those terms. One of the reasons it is difficult to decide just who we are as people has to do with deciding which people we want to be like and which people we don't want to emulate. And usually we want to forge an identity for ourselves that is different from everyone we know. It makes sense that we'd all want to be our own unique selves since we are, after all, unique.
The kinds of questions people ask themselves as they try to decide just who they are include, but are not limited to:
Why do you think it is difficult for people to find their own identity?
Write 1/2 - 3/4 page
Note: Here's a basic grading guide for some of you (Max)
C--Common work
B--Beyond common
A--Above beyond
It's pretty hard to be "above beyond" if you write only 1/2 page
Here's a quote from Sinclair that touches upon this issue:
I wanted only to try to live in accord with the promptings which came from my true self. Why was that so very difficult?
- People are alone in the universe can cannot rely upon society's values
- "God is dead." No, it's not like he was killed. Nietzsche felt that religion shouldn't be a crutch

Who's in Love What Shakespeare Is Saying About Love
Orsino Olivia Love is crazy and unpredictable. Orsino loves the wrong person. Unrequited love. He should move on.

Viola Orsino Viola falls in love with Orsino's loyalty and goodness. She loves his character, not his body or status.

Today we will finish continue reading the play Twelfth Night. As you read, find significant quotes to memorize. Each one of you will have to write 5 lines from memory on Wednesday, April 3rd (10 points). +5 extra credit for memorizing an extra 10 lines.
Find quotes at the following site: Twelfth Night Quotes
Today you will also write a 1/2 page journal explaining what Shakespeare is saying (and why he's saying it)in one of the following quotes:
1. What is love? Tis not hereafter;
Present mirth hath present laughter:
What’s to come is still unsure.
In delay there lies no plenty;
Then come kiss me, sweet and twenty:
Youth’s a stuff will not endure. – Feste, 2.3.43-8)
[love now; you might not have the opportunity later]
2. I hate ingratitude more in a man
Than lying, vainness, babbling, drunkenness,
Or any taint of vice whose strong corruption
Inhabits our frail blood (3.4.354-357)
[Ingratitude is the worst problem a person can have]
3.
This fellow is wise enough to play the fool
And to do that well craves a kind of wit (3.1.60-61)
[you have to be really wise to make the kind of Jokes that Feste makes. She implies that he's not at all foolish. Viola goes on to say that when most people say foolish things, it's because they're stupid and they just become more stupid]
I hope you're enjoying the play and that you can see that it's a comedy. Maybe not exactly a SNL kind of comedy, but funny in that everyone is even more mixed up and messed up in their relationships than we are. That's the point of Shakespearean comedy. It helps us laugh at ourselves and not take our problems too seriously.

The main thing I need to see today (10 participation points) is a specific thesis and three topic sentences for supporting paragraphs. I'm not requiring a detailed outline, but you've got to do this to make sure that your essay is focused. Here are some focused ideas for essays. You could easily turn one of them into a thesis.

3. Put a star in the margin next to the sentence in the paragraph that explains how your example supports the thesis. (You'll have three stars)
4. Put a happy face in the margin next to your most insightful sentence.
THEN EXCHANGE PAPERS AND PROOFREAD YOUR PARTNER'S ESSAY
5. Reader proofreads essay marking punctuation and spelling in at least 5 spots. If you can't find 5, put question marks next to spots that you're not sure about the punctuation or places where a better word could maybe be used.
6. Then write 1 paragraph giving your impressions of the essay. Mention one positive as well as one thing that you think could be done differently.
Vocabulary quiz
The main thing I need to see today (10 participation points) is a specific thesis and three topic sentences for supporting paragraphs. I'm not requiring a detailed outline, but you've got to do this to make sure that your essay is focused. Here are some focused ideas for essays. You could easily turn one of them into a thesis.
PICK ONE so that your essay is focused.
- Personal growth makes people happy
- relationships and family makes people happy
- service makes people happy--community
- being physically active and doing things makes people happy
- focusing your mind on important things makes people happy (more specific version of personal growth)
- Hardship (remember the woman who was run over) makes people happy
- love makes people happy
- Creating works of art makes people happy
- OTHER
You get the idea. And then you need to figure out what your three paragraphs will be.
YOUR STEP ONE OF REVISION
Once you've finished your rough draft, you'll need to go back to make sure that you have a specific thesis. Often (most of the time) you need to refocus your thesis after you've finished writing. After you've refocused, most of the things you originally wrote about will stay pretty much the same, but usually you'll need to do the following:
- Rewrite thesis
- Add one sentence per paragraph tying ideas in with thesis ("and so we see that service makes people happy" (or whatever). Usually this is the last sentence of the paragraph.
- Add another entire paragraph dealing with a new example that develops your main point
- Cut a paragraph that doesn't relate to your new thesis
- You could another sentence per paragraph to further explain how your example supports your thesis
Today you are going to refine your rough draft and then exchange with another student.
DO THE FOLLOWING:
ON YOUR OWN
1. Double underline your thesis. Be sure that it is focused and specific. Revise your thesis.
2. Single underline the topic sentences of each paragraph.

Happy Valentine's Day!
At the end of the period we will spend 20 minutes writing our own creative Valentines. Here are a few of my favorite romantic poems with some awesome lines to put in Valentine's cards:
somewhere i have never traveled by E. E. Cummings
Love Sonnet XXVII by Pablo Neruda
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways by Elizabeth Barret Browning
Sonnet 18, Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer Day? by William Shakespeare
You and I have So Much Love it Burns Like a Fire by Kwan Tao Sheng
She Walks in Beauty Like the Night by Lord Byron
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses
I love you because I know no other way
than this: where I does not exist, nor you,
so close that your hand on my chest is my hand,
so close that your eyes close as I fall asleep
2nd period poems
Baby, you're sexier than socks on a rooster
I know somebody that thinks they might like you a lot. And if I wasn't so shy, I would tell you who it is.
You are like a broom
When you do what you do
you sweep me away

Creative writing prompt: "Your friend calls to say she saw you in the back of a police car yesterday. What happened? Be creative; be original. Most of things that first come to mind aren't all that original. Don't be ordinary.
Review for The Secret Life of Bees. Test tomorrow. The best way to do this is to thumb through the novel tonight, reminding yourself of key events, ideas, and the personalities of the different characters. Another thing that many students do is to go on the internet where they find discussion groups and summaries of the novel. Sparknotes.com is probably the favorite.
